In 2019, Malaysia climbed to 2nd place in the middle-income countries, 8th in the Southeast region and 35th in the overall quality of innovation ( Global Innovation Index, 2019). Later, Malaysia was ranked 37th in the Global Innovation Index in 2017 compared with 35th in 2016 and 32nd in 2015 ( The Star, 2017).
